Contruction Site Safety Operations Example :

To demonstrate what the importance of workplace safety can mean I will draw on an example of a larger project.  When large companies undertake projects that most would not you can see prime examples of good safety practices in effect.  Contruction sites make for a very hazardous area and as such it can be more difficult to maintain safety on the site.  Another problem with contruction is that though your workers may be informed regarding best safey practices, the fact is that contruction sites are “unmanned” during the hours where your employees are not present.  This opens the floodgates to numerous hazards that may be out of your hands considering you are not able to “guard” your project 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How do you maintain safety while not at the construction site?

A fine example :

A parking garage being built in Las Vegas, Nevada and what this contractor did to ensure safety around the site while no one is present. This was a fabulous example of the extremes to which you should adhere to maintain safety at your construction site.
Construction Site Safety Practices. A parking garage under construction and what one contractor did to prevent falling debris and other accidents at his construction site.

A building cover or basically a tarp placed over the structure to isolate the framework under construction and prevent accidents before they happen.  This is certainly a site to see when dealing with large structures.

Safety risk management has an important place in not only major corporate office, but also in smaller home businesses or a non corporate environment where safety concerns are a priority. Corporations and big business always maintain their safety ethics and policies by developing strict guidelines in accordance with state and federal law to maintain a safe workplace. Usually you will find a risk management professional be they a consultant or a round the clock supervisor to maintain policy on the premises. These safety managers are usually required to govern all safety concerns for their building or possibly state. The objective of these safety supervisors is to gear their office and employees toward strong safety objective and loss prevention programs.

Usually safety risk management leaders coordinate safety efforts on and off premises. Recognizing safety protocols and systematic approaches and coordinating these polices across multiple platforms in the work environment in an effort to handle risk more efficiently.

Some examples of what risk management entails :

  • Workers’ Compensation
  • Environmental Health And Safety Procedures
  • Transfer of risk and loss control
  • Standards of practice
  • Safety Policy
  • Safety Promotion And How To Maintain Safety At Work
  • Safety Presentations
  • Reports on Safety Risk Management
  • Individual Authoritative Attention To Safety Detail Among Employees
  • Safety Exterior And Interior Workplace Environmental Health And Safety Procedures
  • Compliance with state and federal safety laws that apply
  • Analyze and implement strategies and procedures in an effort to reduce risks and reduce financial losses

Job safety awareness is possibly the most important facet of workplace safety. When your employees become aware of safety methods, laws, acts, policies, procedures, and good practices it keeps safety an important topic on their minds through the work day.

How can you make job safety awareness a part of your company’s daily activities?

  • Promote safety on an individual basis and give each employee the attention they need to learn about safety and promote safety among other employees.
    • This is especially important with Managers and Supervisors as they are the people responsible for teaching safety awareness and best practices with the employees for which they are in charge. Their safety awareness and safety promotions will trickle down the line and help all employees down the chain keep safety on their minds.
  • Promote safety in writing.
    • Printing safety articles, perhaps in a company newsletter or office emails will serve as job safety awareness reminder for your staff. Perhaps have an employee write up these safety newsletters and email mailing lists so that that employee can promote on the safety policies that deal with your business.
      • Injury Prevention Letters.
      • Safe work environment posters, signs, and promotions.
      • Customer safety on your business’s premises.
      • Clean up safety procedures.
      • Disposal of chemical wastes or other hazardous materials that are involved in your company’s daily jobs.
      • There are many safety procedures specific to individual company practices that only your employees may be in tune with. In house printing of newsletters is an excellent plan to keep employees safety aware in the workplace.
  • Hold safety meetings on the job, in your workplace.
    • Promoting safety awareness in your company’s meetings can be very effective, especially for new hires as it gets them started off on the right track.
    • Health videos, safety videos, safety training exercises and other awareness programs may be a tad boring but become ingrained in your employees as time goes on. Safety Videos are always an easy and fun way to promote safety on the job.
  • Offer safety prizes, safety awards, or other incentives to keep your employees interested!

There is a wide spectrum of workplace heath policies found throughout the United States. Each state has different laws that govern health safety in the workplace in their particular state. Some states have little to no health safety classes, forms, cards, licenses, etc. to speak of where as other states such as Nevada have a rigorous health safety preliminary class you must take before you can be employed in many industries. Las Vegas specifically requires that all new hires, especially casino employees obtain a health card. This requires you to go to a building, which used to be located on Valley View Road and may still be to take these classes. You must watch health videos to inform you of the various safety concerns of which they wish to make you aware. As I have not been employed in every state around the US I do not know each states requirements. I know that New Jersey is much more relaxed than some other states. To my knowledge most states do not make every employee go through as much effort as Nevada which may be because if the large casino industry located there. However New jersey also employees many casino workers as well without the fuss of so many safety procedures. Also I am aware the South Carolina follows pretty much the same procedures as NJ.

What are some safety issues in the workplace?

Sometimes safety issues in the workplace can be hard to determine. Something may not appear to be an issue that warrants concern in your place of work, but actually is actually a safety issue you had just not considered. Depending upon the type of business being run there can be a myriad of issues to watch out for with regard to safety and preventative measures that should be adopted for that particular issue.

Here are some popular safety issues in the workplace :

  • Wet floors cause a slipping or falling hazard.
  • Exposure to high voltage power.
  • Working near wires can cause a tripping hazard or if they are electrical wires it could be worse than tripping you should be concerned with.
  • An overlooked safety issue is a door that opens two ways. When doors allow for entry from both sides it can be important to hang a sign that reminds employees to shout or give some warning before entering the door to alert others they are coming through. A good example of this is in a restaurant where the staff, waitresses, waiters, cooks, bus boys, or other employees enter the kitchen through the same door. Here it is very important to teach proper safety practices to your employees.
  • Working with hot water or other beverages creates a burn hazard.
  • Falling, when working high above the ground safety becomes very important, you may wish to instate rules where each employee must tie down to something so that should they fall there is something to catch them.
  • Helmets or head gear when working near falling object or other dangers. Two examples of this are when working on a construction site where workers throw excess parts and materials down to the ground from high above. Another example is when working with something like telephone poles where you are exposed to electric lines run above your head.
  • Even in a simple office where you push papers around a desk safety issues in the workplace still need be discussed and enforced with your employees as something as small as a staple, tack, or paper clips that have not been properly disposed of can create a safety hazard.

There are many safety issues in our world as we run a million different types of operations and business and sometimes it can be hard to predict what will create the need for proper safety precautions. If you are familiar with rarer safety issues or would just like to educate others on normal safety issues not covered in this blog I encourage you to leave a comment so that others may learn about safety and discuss issues that relate to them in their line of work.

On the job safety can be trickier than in house office safety.  When part of your job involves travel from one place to another sometimes good safety practices get lost in the journey. Have you ever noticed that sometimes construction workers or city employees performing road work often park their pick-up trucks on the side of the road while they work?  When dealing with public safety on the job it can be most important to remember OSHA guidelines and safety procedures.  This topic hits close to home for me as I have known several people that have suffered an injury, or even the loss of a loved one that may have been prevented if strict safety policies were followed more closely.

Oft times workers camp out at a job site until their project is complete and as such sometimes their is a lack of supervision during periods of the job.  While sleeping in the back of your cab may sound cozy, it isn’t.  Many workers will bring along a pop up camper or truck camper they can attach to the rear of their pickup trucks.  Some important things to remember if you have had this idea for your job are as follows :

  • Make sure you have parked your truck a safe distance from the road.
  • Your parking break should be firmly in place before you camp out for the night.
  • All fastenings should be secured properly to your truck.
  • If working in a busy area or on a major highway, place cones around your vehicle so that should a car get too close to you there is at least a warning that they have done so giving them time to steer away before it is too late.
  • Lighting - Adding lighting to the area so that oncoming traffic can see your vehicle is a must at night if you know you will be on the side of a busy or highly trafficked road.

Automobiles are one of man’s most dangerous creations and are the cause of many deaths throughout the year.  Everyone hears about accidents on the road and most of us tend to ignore these tragic events, however as you know most accidents can be prevented through excellent safety measures.

Truck Safety On The Road And Road Work Safety Is Just As Important If Not More Important Than In House Office Safety.

Managing Ethics In The Workplace :

Workplace ethics and safety ethics in the office, more and more businesses are promoting good ethical practices in their offices.  In today’s world these issues are certainly on the rise and have been for quite some time as well they should be.  Promoting good ethical practices amongst your employees or coworkers is an excellent way not only to maintain safety, but also encourages good standards in your workplace.

Ethics as described by the American Heritage Dictionary :

  • A set of principles of right conduct.
  • A theory or a system of moral values.
  • ethics - The study of the general nature of morals and of the specific moral choices to be made by a person; moral philosophy.
  • ethics - The rules or standards governing the conduct of a person or the members of a profession: medical ethics.

What does ethics in the workplace have to do with your business or your employees?  You may think that this topic is absurd with regard to your company, I assure you, it is not.  Ensuring good ethical standards and practices in your workplace benefits not only your employees but you and your business as well.  Surprised?  Wondering how good ethical standards can influence your employees and your income?

With regard to your employees :

  • Good moral practices encourage employees to act morally.
  • High ethical standards indicate to your employees that you care about their needs, safety, and well being.
  • When there is a high moral code or standard at the office employees feel safer, more relaxed, less pressured and work more easily.
  • A stress free work environment. Stress levels among employees is a well known issue that hurts employee performance.

There are many more facets that we could cover here, but I believe you get the point at this juncture.  High ethical and moral standards in your job or at your office encourage a feeling of safety, friendship, and strong bonds in your business.

Consider this as well :

When you search for employees with good ethical values you are almost guaranteed to hire a better employee.  Think about what type of people you want to surround yourself with?  As a boss you may not have to deal with every employee all day long, but remember your employees do, so try to make them as comfortable as possible.
